Welsh Labour Government end 2018 with dire housing record

Figures released this month have brought bad news for the Welsh Labour Government as housebuilding falls again.

The number of new dwellings started in Wales in the year to September – 5,922 – was 15% lower than the previous year, while the 1,431 started in the third quarter of 2018 was down by 21% compared to the previous three months.

The 6,043 completions in October 2017-September 2018 was 15% smaller than the amount finished in the period before. In Quarter 3 2018, the number of homes finished in Wales was 17% less than the same time in 2017.

The largest number of homes started between July and September were in Cardiff (218), the Vale of Glamorgan (158), and Torfaen (137).

However, in the same period, construction only started on five houses in Powys and seven in Merthyr Tydfil. More than half of Wales’ council areas saw less than 50 starts.

Only 18 of the new homes were built by local authorities in Wales, all of them by Swansea Council.

The Welsh Conservatives recently launched their Housing Strategy, Housing a Nation, which set a target of building 12,000 each year during the next assembly term, and 100,000 homes over a decade.

In the same month, Welsh Conservative and Shadow Housing Secretary David Melding AM called on the Welsh Government to scrap Land Transaction Tax for first time buyers on properties up to £250,000.

Mr Melding said:

“The trend in Wales is that fewer and fewer houses are being built despite the fact demand is higher than ever.

“All the experts agree – housebuilding targets in Wales are not ambitious enough, and the Welsh Labour Government can’t even hit those.

“But the Welsh Conservatives do have a strategy to reinvigorate the construction industry in Wales and will do what is necessary to solve the housing crisis Labour have neglected.

“So I urge the new First Minister to use 2019 as the year to develop a cross-party consensus to build more homes. The Welsh Conservatives stand ready.”
