On the morning of 9 June 2017, the day after Polling Day in Cardiff West, Conservative candidate Matt Smith said:
"I would like to thank my fantastic campaign team and the people of Cardiff West for giving us 2,860 more votes than in 2015. It was a pleasure to get to know so many people across this great constituency. Although we were unsuccessful on this occasion, by increasing our vote to the highest level since 1992, we have made it more difficult for Labour's local elites to carry on taking the communities of Cardiff West for granted. By challenging Labour's oligarchy we have given a voice to many former Labour voters, sick of Labour complacency and alienated by the left-wing identity politics of Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party."
